A Gentleman Drunk

PHOENIX, ARIZONA—Just a few times in the history of publishing, an author shares an autobiography that is so unexpected and yet so perceptual that readers don’t know which is more amazing: the concept itself or the fact that the author experienced it. A Gentleman Drunk by Jeffrey makes you believe that anyone, from a Wall Street Executive to a homeless street bum, can beat alcoholism.

Jeffrey’s memoir embraces a self-battle that brewed for forty years.  He grew up in a New Jersey Jewish suburb in the 1950’s with low self-esteem his father had exacerbated.  Mixed with equal doses of stern advice and disappointment, Jeffrey’s relationship with his father remained very distant and often left him searching for something to fill the void.  He began playing piano, in an effort to be closer to his Grandma, which became the only source of pride that his father would ever acknowledge.

Jeffrey found comfort in cakes, pie, and candy, gorging on sweets in pursuit of happiness until a fight with a bully introduced a new addiction that would dominate half of his life.  His father refused to teach him self defense, which inspired his rebellious side to break into the liquor cabinet.  Although the first drink brought insufferable illness, alcohol soon erased all of his problems and became a necessity for everyday social survival.

Jeffrey guides us through his alcohol-consumed life while we watch helplessly as his addiction destroys his marriage, business, and financial security, leaving him broken hearted and clinging onto what little he had left.  It isn’t until he is found by police, lying in a New York City gutter at 2:00 a.m., that Jeffrey realizes that he may have a problem.  Could he be an alcoholic?

A Gentleman Drunk journals the extended ballad of one man’s true battle with alcohol and how he conquered it.  This distinguished achievement of real-life drama is combined with wit and brutal honesty as the sobering events of Jeffrey’s life leave him at rock bottom before he discovers the source of his decline.
